Movies are rated from 1 to 5 stars (1 star being terrible, 5 being outstanding)."Top Pick!" indicates a movie that I think is very good and will have a lot of popular appeal. Movie links go to Amazon.com. If the film you are interested in is out-of-print, I recommend ordering a used copy via Amazon.com. I've had very good luck obtaining hard-to-find and obscure films this way. |
The
Fugitive *****
Top Pick! This Oscar-nominated mystery and action film features Harrison Ford (as a man wrongfully accused of murder) and Jones as US Marshal Philip Gerard. Gerard is doggedly stubborn and won't rest until he captures escaped prisoner Ford. The twists and turns of the plot make this a gripping movie. Jones got an Oscar nomination for his role, and it's easy to see why—he effectively creates a steadfast and dedicated character who commands attention whenever he's on screen. James Newton Howard composed an outstanding (and Oscar-nominated) score and Andrew Davis directed. Highly recommended. VHS | DVD |
Coal
Miner's Daughter *****
Top Pick! This is one of my favorite movies—it is the semi-autobiographical story of Country singer Loretta Lynn. Jones plays her country-boy husband, who marries here when she is barely a teenager. I'm not a big Country music fan, but I found it hard not to like this fine film. Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn is unsurpassed; Jones is wonderful (though difficult to recognize with his bleach-blonde hair!). His character is endearing when he takes on the roll as a "stage husband", who sacrifices much to promote his wife's singing career. VHS |
Space
Cowboys ***
OK, so this isn't a perfect movie, but I thought it was lots of fun and I heartily enjoyed it. Three "old geezers" who were in a government space program many years before are needed once again. Clint Eastwood leads the group, (which also includes Donald Sutherland, James Garner, and Jones). The story lags at times, has plausibility problems and misses the mark occasionally, but I couldn't resist the general premise—that you're never too old to contribute something great to the world. A lot of tongue-in-cheek humor and a bittersweet romance for Jones makes this a satisfying film and suitable for almost anyone. VHS | DVD |
Double
Jeopardy ***
A very entertaining film starring Ashley Judd and Jones. While not as compelling as "The Fugitive", it's got a good pace and is a nice adventure and mystery film. There are some plausability problems with the story but I didn't let that prevent me from enjoying the movie. Jones plays a washed-up alcoholic ex-law professor currently running a half-way house for female parolees. Not unlike his Gerard character in "The Fugitive", he is relentless when he is following the trail of a fugitive (Judd). His flawed character is endearing and likeable. Some brief nudity and a sex scene (featuring Judd) near the beginning of the movie makes this film not suitable for some viewers, but most others will find this a fairly entertaining movie and a good vehicle for Jones and Judd. Moon Rising [awaiting review] |
The
Client *****
Top Pick! Based on a popular John Grisham novel, this film is a well-done thriller and mystery. Susan Sarandon and her young "client" are the main characters in this film. Jones plays a Scripture-quoting prosecuting attorney who has his eye on the Governer's seat and has never met a television camera he didn't like. Jones tackles this colorful character with gusto and it's easy to see why he was nominated for an Oscar. The relationship between Sarandon and the her 11-year-old client (Brad Renfro) are a highlight in this film. Sarandon's excellent portrayal of gutsy underdog lawyer Reggie Love is touching, and it is gratifying to know that she was nominated for an Oscar as well. There is some disturbing subject matter in this film which might upset sensitive viewers and young children. Most viewers will find it gripping and definitely worth a look. VHS | DVD |
Men
in Black ****
Top Pick! OK, so maybe it's not for everyone, but this movie is such a great vehicle for Will Smith and Jones, so it's hard to resist. While the plot is on the slim side and the premise absurd (but it's supposed to be!), this movie still succeeds in being highly entertaining. However, if you don't like fanciful science fiction movies with a wicked sense of humor, this might not be the film for you. Jones plays one of the "Men in Black", a stoic, unflappable seasoned veteran whose job it is to regulate "illegal aliens" (as in "outer space" aliens) for a secret government agency. While Smith gets most of the funny lines, Jones is unsurpassed as his deadpan comrade. The two together form a perfect comic team. Young or sensitive children might be alarmed by some of the action and creepy (but funny) aliens, but for the most everyone else will enjoy this film (as long as they like absurd science fiction!). Rules
of Engagement [awaiting full review] A solid movie with good performances by all. A worthwhile film with an excellent performance by Tommy Lee Jones. VHS | DVD |
U.S.
Marshals ***
I'd give this movie 3 1/2 stars if I could. It's really not that bad—it just doesn't compare to "The Fugitive". Jones reprises the role of Philip Gerard, the US Marshal who was on the trail of Harrison Ford in "The Fugitive". Much of the cast from "The Fugitive" return in their roles as Gerard's fellow marshals. Wesley Snipes is good as the wrongfully accused "fugitive" in this movie. This movie doesn't quite measure up, despite an excellent cast and a great musical score by Jerry Goldsmith. It's still entertaining enough, however, but I have to say I consider it a bit of a disappointing "sequel" to "The Fugitive". VHS | DVD |
