Burt Lancaster Movie Reviews
Movies are rated from 1 to 5 stars (1 star being terrible, 5 being outstanding)."Top Pick!" indicates a movie that I think is very good and will have a lot of popular appeal. Movie links go to Amazon.com. If the film you are interested in is out-of-print, I recommend ordering a used copy via Amazon.com. I've had very good luck obtaining hard-to-find and obscure films this way. |
Seven
Days in May *****
John Frankenheimer (who frequently worked with Lancaster) directed this taut Cold War drama which is written by Rod Serling (of "Twilight Zone" fame). Lancaster plays an unstable general who wishes to overthrow the President (Fredric March), because he (the President) favors a nuclear disarmament plan. Kirk Douglas also stars, along with many other big-name actors, including Ava Gardner, Edmond O'Brien and Martin Balsam. Excellent score by Jerry Goldsmith. Recommended. VHS | DVD |
The
Crimson Pirate ****
Fun swashbuckler film in which a young Lancaster gets to show of his acrobatic skills. This movie is no cinematic masterpiece, but it's an amusing romp and well worth viewing. Fun for the whole family. Lots of colorful antics, romance and adventure—much enjoyment for all! VHS | DVD |
Criss
Cross **** Classic noir movie made early in Lancaster's career. Lancaster plays a guy who still carries a torch for his fickle ex-wife (Yvonne De Carlo). Things get messy when Lancaster and thug Dan Duryea both compete for De Carlo's affections. Add a risky armoured car heist, and you have all the ingredients for film noir. It's also a treat to see parts of "old L.A.", since this film in shot in 1940s Los Angeles. VHS | DVD |

Interesting but generally average drama about Native American athlete Jim Thorpe. Based on actual events. |
Tense WWII action picture directed by frequent Lancaster director John Frankenheimer. Lancaster tries to save precious artworks from the Nazis. |
|
Tense but somewhat depressing drama about the cut-throat business of show business agents and the press in early 1960s New York. |
A thought-provoking drama that was later adapted to become the Michael Douglass film "Falling Down." This version is less violent and definitely worth a look. |
From the famous stage play, this is a classic and worthwhile movie. Recommended. |
Gritty and somewhat depressing, this '70s-era western isn't for everyone, but it still is a taut and interesting drama. |
TOP PICK! A must-see for everyone. Powerful, heart-wrenching, with an all-star cast. Lancaster is absolutely outstanding in this. |
